Huge amount of data stolen, employees’ computers blocked, offices closed and employees sent home.
The day before yesterday, on Monday 24/11 the employees of Sony Pictures read an unusual message on the screens of their computers. A person or a group of people nicknamed #GOP wrote that they have files containing secrets of the company. They wrote they expect something but it still isn’t certain what they want but it is known that if this is not fulfilled then private data of Sony will appear on the Internet. Employees were sent to work and Sony is if trying to overcome the attack which has paralysed work in offices round the globe.
As you remember, day after day for about half a year Sony was being under quite successful attack (as 77 million accounts were stolen) by a number of hackers who all shared the same goal. They all wanted revenge for the way Sony treated George Hotz (geohot), a hacker who broke into security system of PlayStation 3.
It’s been a few months since the end of a lawsuit against LulzSec, which was the most fierce attacker and Sony is in trouble again! Below there is a screen shot of the message Sony employees got:
Here’s what they read:
“Hacked by #GOP
We’ve already warned you, and this is just the beginning.
We continue till our request be met
We’ve obtained all your internal data, including your secrets and top secrets.
If you don’t obey us, we’ll release data shown below to the world.
Determine what will you do till November the 24th, 11:00 pm (GMT).
Post an email address and the following sentence on your twitter and Facebook,
and we’ll contact the email address. “Thanks a lot to God’s Apstls contributing
your great effort to peace of the world.”
And even if you just try to seek out who we are, all of your data will be released at once.
Information about the attack first appeared on Reddit. Internet users quickly downloaded the 200 MB archive linked in the message. It contained two files List1 and List2 which turned out to be the lists of files stolen by hackers accompanied by the message from the hacker (hackers?)
“These two files are the lists of secret data we have acquired from SPE.
Anyone who needs the data, send an email titled “To the Guardians of Peace”
to the following email addresses:
The list of stolen files is enormous and probably it is a list of files coming from employees’ computers and Sony’s file servers.
Internet users have already started searching through the most interesting file names, and because Sony pictures is mostly all about films, they can find passport scans of movie stars such as Cameron Diaz or Angelina Jolie.
list1.txt:Angelina Jolie passport.pdf
list1txt: Diaz, Cameron – Passport.pdf
There are also agreements with composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki
and also files with insurance and instructions in case of security breaches.
Who hacked Sony Pictures and why?
No one has a clue as to who #GOP is. The hackers didn’t make any demands. In the message that appeared on employees’ screens there was no mention of any sort of a ransom just the call “to obey”. The speculations are that maybe some managers got the message with demands and these may have been ignored so hackers decided to show Sony how serious the situation was.
If hackers are really in the possession of the files they claim to possess, Sony Picture will make a tremendous loss and pulling together will be a long lasting endeavour.
